Submission to the AER on the Better Bills Guideline

Addressing the barriers and complexities that exist for consumers and industry with regards to a heavily regulated energy bill is long overdue. However, we see an opportunity to further guide best practice through the following methods.

We welcome the opportunity to comment on the Australian Energy Regulator (AER)'s Better Bills Draft Guideline consultation questions.

We would firstly like to commend the AER for their extensive evidence and principles-based approach to developing these guidelines. Consumer research and testing as well as allowing for innovation and flexibility is key to ensuring better consumer outcomes from design decisions.

We see considerable value in improved billing to deliver simpler, more understandable bills for energy consumers, and in the process, build consumer trust and confidence in the energy market. Addressing the barriers and complexities that exist for consumers and industry with regards to a heavily regulated energy bill is long overdue. However, we see an opportunity to further guide best practice through methods such as:

  • Digital accessibility
  • Cost to serve
